Life in 1769

Window tax rates from 1769 The attached image is take from a diary that is in my possession. The diary is from 1769. It shows the tax charged on households based on the number of windows that their houses had. A clear attempt to make those with more money (biggest houses) pay more tax than poorer people (smallest houses). The teaching profession has recently enjoyed a rekindling of a love affair between teachers and research. In 2009 the first throes of fancy were entered into with the release of John Hattie's Visible Learning book (known as the White book). The wave of enthusiasm with which the early adopters greeted this book has turned into a considerable surge, such that Hattie's work is now both revered and reviled by the same profession. Where a profession shows interest, you can guarantee that there will be those who attempt to capitalise on the momentum of others. It doesn't take long for the opportunists to tout their wares, hoping that the increased professional footfall gives them the chance to become established: "Beware the snake-oil merchants!" cry the, well, merchants of snake-oil. Hopefully, fans of Python will recognise straight away the heading as being a reference to the "Four Yorkshiremen". For new readers of this blog, I'm a teacher who joined the profession a little later in life than is "normal". I am now 40 years old and have worked at the chalkface for 10 years. This post aims to talk about my cultural coming-out; how a miner's son from the heart of the South Yorkshire coalfield joined the hated profession of teaching. It will probably work best if I re-tell this in reverse chronological order. The subtle changes will be best seen this way. I employed this technique in another blog ( I want to be World Champion ) In the following, please note that "rich/poor" is interchangeable with "not working class/working class". Having read Jilly Cooper's superb book " Class " as well as other works, I know that class is not the same as wealth. However, readers of this blog might not share my view.
